Three-bedroom, three-bathroom single-family house in Silver Spring lists for $399,900

When your heart is set on owning a single-family house and your budget tops out at $400,000, you sometimes need to look for an older house, a smaller house or one in a neighborhood farther from Metro or other amenities. In Montgomery County, where the average sales price was $546,156 in April, according to the Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors, finding the home you want can be particularly challenging but not impossible.

For example, the single-family house at 604 Forest Glen Rd. in Silver Spring, priced at $399,900, is a little over one mile from the Forest Glen Metro station. Residents can walk to playgrounds and trails along Sligo Creek and to shops and restaurants in the Four Corners neighborhood.

The house was previously priced at $407,000. Annual property taxes are $3,826.

Built in 1938, this house has 2,171 finished square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The three-story house has hardwood flooring and an upstairs master suite with a sloped ceiling, a private bathroom and an office nook. Two bedrooms and a second bathroom are on the main level, which also has a fireplace in the living room, a dining room and an updated kitchen. The lower level has a bar, a full bath and a recreation room. The house, which has central air conditioning and gas heat, doesn’t have a garage so owners must park on the street.

Local schools are Forest Knolls Elementary and Silver Spring International Middle, each rated 7 or 8 out of 10 by GreatSchools.org, which is above average. High school students can choose between schools that are part of the Downcounty High School Consortium: Blair, Einstein, Kennedy, Northwood, or Wheaton.
