The Dream Team, a billiards team out of Lucky’s Corner Pocket in Davenport, won a national 8-ball title.
LAKELAND — The Dream Team had a good feeling about this one.
Larry Terris, team captain for the Dream Team — a local billiards team based out of Lucky’s Corner Pocket in Davenport, was confident as his team traveled to Las Vegas last month for the United States Professional Poolplayers Association 8-ball National Finals at Mickey’s Cues & Brews. Call it a good feeling.
“Before we signed up for the qualifier, in my heart … I knew we were going to win in Vegas,” he said. “I just knew it.”
And that they did. The Dream Team won the 8-ball title and brought home a $10,000 prize.
“To me, we went out there to win it and that’s it,” Terris said. “It was no accident we won. We still had to get it done.”
While this was the 11th time Terris had shot pool in Las Vegas, he wasn’t the only experienced member of the team. Geronimo Garcia, a team leader, finished ninth in a 9-ball tournament in Las Vegas two years ago and was back this year with The Dream Team.
“I told them, we go in here as a team and walk out as a team,” Garcia said. “That was the main thing. Everybody gets along with each other. We didn’t drink. I told them if I see one drink, you’re not playing.”
The Dream Team qualified for the UPA national event after winning a 10-team qualifier at Lucky’s Corner Pocket in early May. They received an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas for the national event, which was held June 20-26.
Garcia echoed Terris in saying this wasn’t a vacation. It was a business trip.
“A couple of players who had that brand-new pressure shined,” Terris said. “Good for them. Obviously, there’s a lot on the line. I’m proud of the whole team.”
With 25-30 teams competing in the 8-ball competition, The Dream Team edged out second place Breakers, a team from North Carolina, and the Texas-based ELMN-8….
