The 10th Annual Liberty Financial Group’s Liberty Cup is in the books, and for the second year in a row the women controlled the outcome. Only this year the ladies of Wildcat Creek led Art Stonebraker’s team to its fourth championship.
The IUK contingent, led by Brandi Jones’ low score of 76, along with coach Julie Wagner, teammate Hattie Johnson, and Liberty Cup veterans Shelby Schave and Karen Swan, combined to score 87 points; outscoring runner up, Kokomo Country Club by 23 points. Chippendale and the Legion’s women each scored 72. The final scores were Wildcat 487, KCC 474, Chippendale 462, and American Legion 445.
The KCC men edged Wildcat 408 to 400, followed by Chippendale 390 and the Legion 373.
Every year the Cup seems to come down to one or two key holes. This year Wildcat made number three that hole, making five team birdies and outscoring KCC and the Legion by seven and Chippendale by 11. Holes one and seven were costly to KCC and Chippendale, with Wildcat winning each by five. Holes 13 and 14 spelled doom for the Legion, scoring only 19 and 15 going down 15 points on those two holes.
There were some outstanding individual performances. Chippendale’s Ben Marvin Egel was medalist with a five underscore of 65. On a side note, Egel won the Chippendale Club Championship over the weekend.
Playing for the KCC home team, Rex Gingerich and Brian Harris posted three under 67s. The county champ, Nick Irish, led the victorious Wildcat squad with a one under 69 and county runner-up Josh Kinney scored an even par 70. Chippendale’s John Hodson landed a 72 and on another side note followed that with a seven under 66 on Saturday in the Chippendale Club Championship. Wildcat’s Josh Maggard also put up a 72. (See Page B2 for all scores.)
On the women’s side, only Jones of Wildcat broke 80 with a 76. Chris Lalonde led Chippendale with an 81. Lela Crawford of the Legion posted 81, and Diane Pfeifer was KCC’s best with an 83.
Liberty Financial Group’s traveling Liberty Cup trophy is in the Pro Shop at Wildcat Creek for the fourth time, tying the Country Club for the most wins with Chippendale and the Legion each with one.
Next year’s Liberty Cup is scheduled for the second Friday in September at Wildcat Creek. Thanks to all of the players for making the Liberty Cup Howard County’s premier golf event and Brad Nicholson for the scoring, the golf pros, and courses for all of your help. See you next year.
