Glen Ridge Motorsports Park finally opens season

For The Recorder

Glen Ridge Motorsports Park was finally able to complete a night of racing last Friday that saw second-generation driver Danny Varin, of Fonda, take his first Ridge modified win over Jim Becker. Varin does have a couple 305 winged sprint car victories at the Montgomery County Bull Ring.
This night saw the long awaited debut of the IMCA modified division that many have said was very competitive. Will Ward took the win over his father Bill Ward. In the regular modified feature, the young Varin was piloting his father Bobby Varin’s No. 00 modified, as Bobby was out at the Brewerton Speedway with the Palmer’s Service No. 76 TEO chassis, doing some early season testing for future events in 2017. Bobby did not fare very well and finished toward the rear of the field.
A couple of other young drivers who did very well last week include Fonda-Fultonville Central School student A.J. Miller, of Glen, who captured one of the E & V Energy Novice Sportsman 15-lap features at the Fulton Speedway on Saturday night. On Friday night, Cody Clark, of Dolgeville, led the final 14 laps of the Ted’s Body Shop Crate Sportsman 20-lap feature at the Afton Motorsports Park.
A little piece of information that caught my eye this week, modified driver Brett Hearn has now accumulated 895 victories in his illustrious career. It was only a few years ago when he captured win No. 800 at Fonda Speedway.
Fonda will be in action tonight, with a tribute to past drivers and an on track meet and greet. Please take the time and effort to go down and visit with the drivers and crews, you will be so glad that you were able to talk to a driver face to face versus never knowing who they are or what they look like.
Via Port Rotterdam Mall will be hosting a Bike Rally today starting at noon for all makes and models of motorcycles. There will be vendors, music, food and drinks. Free admission for all.
